Saturday 8: Service, Snuggles, and Sarasota

Another busy week around here!  We started the week off by taking Little Buddy to do his monthly community service.  It was our goal for the New Year to start teaching our little guy about helping others.  This month, he wanted to help feed the doggies and kitties at the local shelter.  The shelter volunteers thought he was pretty cute putting the cans of food in the donation baskets!

I also made Little Buddy a tie-blanket this week that featured one of his favorite characters: Charlie Brown!  I think he approved of it, since he took it with him everywhere!

I love this picture of him all snuggled in it!

We also did some more painting outside.  I LOVE doing art projects with him and may have to make a separate budget for our art supply addiction.  I just can't help myself!  It's good for him and it's also very good for me helping me to learn to let him be a kid and make a mess once and awhile.

Finger painting!

Posing with the very eclectic birdhouse he painted.  Hopefully some very special birds will appreciate the custom paint job!

Hanging his bird house.  Now we just wait to see if anyone moves in!

The second half of the week I was in Sarasota for another conference.  The symposium when really well, and my academic mind had a good time, but I am glad this is the last trip away from my boys until June.  Two conferences in one month was a bit crazy.  And I missed them a lot.

Sarasota sunset.

It was also hard to be away since Little Buddy's ear infection still hadn't gotten better, and all the drainage was starting to affect his breathing.  Time for the nebulizer!

Daddy giving Little Buddy breathing treatments.

Proof that Daddy spoils Little Buddy just as much as Momma.  "Aww, Buddy, you don't feel good?  Here, let me get you a new track for your cars."

Finally home and snuggling with my buddy.  Missed him so much!

Good night,

Saturday 7: Lots of Love

This week may have been one of Little Buddy's favorite weeks ever.  We started it off with one of his Christmas gifts being fulfilled: Sesame Street Live!  We splurged a bit and got seats fairly close.  Little Buddy's enjoyment was well worth the spending.

So close to the stage!

Breathless with anticipation!

There they are!

He got really excited when Cookie Monster came down from the stage...

...but he could barely contain his awe when Elmo came down!

Elmo even gave him a high five!

Watching on in amazement.

The infamous Elmo balloons.

Enjoying our family time!

We spent the rest of the week preparing for Valentine's Day.  Little Buddy and I decided to bake cut-out cookies for his school party.  It was a lovely moment for me; we used my Grandma's recipe, the same one my mom and I always used together.  Cooking is so special to me, and sharing the passion with my little guy means so much to me, but making my Grandma's cookies with him?  That was an amazing feeling.

Rolling out the dough.

Cutting out the hearts!

All ready for the oven.

The finished product:  Snoopy Valentines with Sugar Cookies.  What toddler could resist?

Before Little Buddy's class's Valentine Party on Wednesday, we went to Church for Ash Wednesday Mass.  He was much more aware of the marks on our foreheads year.  He was, once again, very exuberant during church.  :)

Got our ashes!

Enjoying his Valentine's Party with his class.

Valentine's Day was actually on Thursday this week, and my morning started off well, with some lovely flowers and chocolates from my two favorite guys.  I know a lot of people aren't keen on Valentine's Day, but as busy as we all get with work and school, it's nice to take the time to do something special for the ones we love.

Puts a smile on my face.

Little Buddy and I spent the afternoon getting the house decorated for Daddy, to show him how much we love him.  My little guy was quite excited to set everything up for Daddy's surprise!

Our "Be Mine" banner.  Little Buddy loved coloring it!

Setting out our homemade Valentines decorations in the kitchen.

Little Buddy made this in school for us.  I was just excited he told them to write "Mommy & Daddy" instead of "Elmo!"

Little Buddy ended up being a little fussy in the evening, and dimmed our celebration a bit.  We decided to take him back to the doctor on Friday morning.  Turns out that his ear infection had not cleared up and that his allergy drainage had intensified it.  With him being allergic to penicillin, we don't have many antibiotic choices, but they were able to put him on another kind that should work.  He seemed to feel a bit better after the appointment, so we all went to lunch (we were lucky to be having a four day weekend with Daddy).

Little Buddy by his favorite fountain after lunch.  He looks so old in this picture!

We ended the week with the first fish fry of the season at our church.  It was a lot of fun and there was a lot of delicious food.  I think Little Buddy enjoyed himself, especially because there was an unlimited supply of ketchup!

Yummy!

"More ketchup, please?"

As much as I enjoyed this week with my family, I do have to say that I sometimes feel stretched too thin.  I cannot wait until school is done so that I can focus on more quality time with them, and less on homework and reading!  Just ten weeks left!

Good night,

Saturday 6: Day by Day, Bird by Bird

Oh what a crazy week!  I was very excited to have had two papers accepted into an educational conference, but it also meant that I had to be in San Antonio for almost all of the week.  It was a great experience, but I missed my guys bunches.  Daddy took off work to be home with Little Buddy while I was gone.  I know those two had a great time together because I know how much my husband values his time with our son.  I knew I loved my husband before Little Buddy was born, but seeing what an amazing father he is just makes me fall in love with him more everyday.  Thank you for being you, sweetheart!

In any case, Cohort 24 had a great time representing at SERA.  I am so proud to be part of such an amazing program and privileged to be among such wonderful people.

Cohort 24 after presenting our group paper (to a great deal of positive feedback)!

Celebrating in the evening.  We will get there, bird by bird!

Even though I had a wonderful "grown-up" time at the conference, I was very excited to get home on Friday afternoon.  Because Daddy had Habitat again on Saturday, Little Buddy and I had plenty of time to catch up.  I decided to take him to try park near our house that we hadn't been to yet.  It was fantastic and I know we will be back often.

Checking out the play structure.

They had a really cool climbing wall.

He loved climbing up as fast as he could and then heading to...

...the slide!

My knight in shining armor!

We ended our playtime with lunch at a Mexican restaurant we had wanted to try.  The food was just  ok, but we had fun on our lunch date.  How could you not have fun with guy across the table from you?

I'm not going to lie; trying to keep up the weekly blog this year has been difficult.  It's been hard for me to remember what we did all week come Saturday, and my own habits of documenting each day from last year are dying hard.  Plus, school is trying to kick my behind and I am not sure if this blog should focus on Little Buddy or on our family as a whole.  I am still trying to get into the groove with this blog and find a compromise between memories and time demands, so hang in there.  It should get more fluid soon, or else I will change up the format or goals.  It's nice to be in charge.  ;)

Night all,

Saturday 5: Happy and You Know It

We are trying to incorporate new, fun, and healthy meals into our routine this year and try to stay out of our usual rut.  This week, we started off with a tasty butternut squash and apple soup.

So tasty!

Little Buddy wasn't a big fan of calling it "soup" (to him, soup equals chili), so we gave him some bread and told him to dip it in the "squash salsa."  That, he loved!  I don't mind being a little sneaky if it gets him to eat his veggies.

The next day, Monday, was a school day for Little Buddy and he was all about it.  It so fun to see him get excited for class.  His favorite thing to do there is sing "Happy and You Know It" with his class, and he often sings it excitedly at home.  What's not fun, however, is now trying to pick him up from school in the afternoon.  "More school, Momma, more school!" followed by some tears and pouting in the parking lot.  Not even his new underwear (I finally found a set with Big Bird on it!) could snap him out of his despair at leaving school.  Thankfully, he was willing to take a nap and that helped break the funk before dinner.

More undies to wear over diapers!  Hopefully, we are on the right track.

Our Monday meal adventure: The big enchilada!  We've only been trying to make this for a month.  It actually turned out very tasty!

Our Tuesday routine took a bit of a turn.  Instead of Boot Camp, we went to the school open house at St. Ed's.  Little Buddy will start his transitional kindergarten there once he is four, so we like to go and familiarize ourselves with the school, staff, and curriculum requirements now so we will be ready.  He seemed to enjoy the tour and the four-year-old classroom, and he really enjoyed the free muffins!

After our school trip, I tried to take Little Buddy to the local library, an activity we try to be regular about, but never seem to make it.  We usually go to Toddler Time on Thursday (for up to 2 yrs), but Tuesday was for the preschool set (3-6 yrs).  You would think that with Little buddy being two and a half, we could make it through the preschool story time.  That would be a negative, ghost rider.  Toddler time has more get up and move activity, which Little Buddy prefers.  We left preschool time early, but managed to pick out a few books in the kids' section before leaving for lunch.

On Wednesday, I unexpectedly had to go to pick Little Buddy up from school an hour into his day.  The weather has really warmed up here and everything is starting to bloom.  It's lovely, but no fun at all for my little guy's allergies.  His nose was running uncontrollably at school, so his school wanted to send him home early.  Although I had a lot of homework, we were able to make a day of it and meet friends at Wonderwild.  His nose dried up immediately once we started playing inside.  We both had a lot of fun, and the day got even better when Daddy stopped by to eat lunch with us.

Passed out after a fun with friends at Wonderwild!

We stayed very busy on Thursday,  with Boot Camp, some playground time, and lunch with Daddy before nap.  I was very proud of Little Buddy for climbing up the rock wall with just a bit of assistance.  He's not much of a climber by habit, so it was great to see him try something new.

Proud of him for climbing up the wall.  I was just a little anxious when he climbed out of my reach!  It's much taller than it looks here.

In the afternoon, once Little Buddy woke up from nap, we headed out in the back yard because the weather was so nice.  As I set up some of our painting materials for some art time, I got a surprise: Turns out Little Buddy can reach up and open the gate!  He is just too tall!  Guess I am going to have to have Daddy lock it up there is no escaping.  I was able to distract him and get him back to painting.

He was too quick for me to snap a pic of him actually unlatching the gate.

Art time!

Finishing the day with a Happy Birthday call to Uncle C...

...and story time!  We decided to real Little Buddy's library books tonight.  I always let Little Buddy pick out his own books from the children's section, but I was surprised about one of the books when we started reading it.  Unbeknownst to me, one of the books he picked was a children's book on coping with divorce!  It was a bit of a shock, but he really likes reading the "Mommy, Daddy" book.

This Friday was Daddy's day off, so we were excited to spend the day together.  Following Boot Camp, we went to Chuy's for lunch, where we saw a coworker of Daddy's and his young daughter.  The little girl was very cute a bit smitten with Little Buddy.  She even colored a napkin for him after she found out he liked boats.

Boat

Message on the back of the boat.  Oh my little guy is already attracting the older ladies!

After lunch, we took Little Buddy with us to pick out a new couch for upstairs.  Thankfully, there was a little children's play area set up, and he was content playing legos with the giant raccoon.

Playing legos with his new friend.

"Good job, Raccoon!"

"Momma, Raccoon and I are going to try out this recliner!"

***

On Saturday, Daddy had Habitat for Humanity, so Little Buddy and I got a lot of quality time after my run.  It was so nice, we played outside all morning.  We even opted for another picnic lunch.

Peanut butter tortillas al fresco!

Getting a quick Skype session in with Mamaw and Papaw after lunch.  You could tell he was starting to get tired, though, because his eyes almost shut a few times, lol.  Thankfully, he took a great nap.

For dinner, we decided to make pizza.  Grammy and Pop-Pop had sent Little Buddy his own mini pizza-making set.  He was happy to contribute to the dinner preparations.

Sprinkling the cheese.

Very focused with his pepperoni.

We did it!

The finished product...yummy!

No better way to finish a day than with Daddy snuggles.  I love hearing that giggle!

It was great to just spend the day hanging with my little guy, especially since I have a very big week coming up.  I will be at a conference in San Antonio for most of the next week and I know I am going to miss him.  He and Daddy are going to have a great time together though!

Good night,

LBM
